Being a CEO is an enormous privilege. It is also a very demanding role. As CEO the needs of the organisation come first and that can create significant pressure on the leader. It can be a challenge to balance health, well-being and family needs with the demands of the job – and perform at maximum potential. While the CEO is surrounded by people, there are very few that they can confide in, on the most difficult issues.
The CEO can talk with the Board and Chair who are there to support and challenge, but there are some limits to how open a CEO can be. Likewise, the leader cannot be fully open with their direct reports. Nor can they take their work home with them or share issues with friends. There is a need for the leader to have a trusted, professional, informed and experienced person on hand to help – and available when the CEO needs them.
Having completed three successful roles as CEO, Joe is now working to advise, coach and mentor other CEOs. He is now supporting leaders across public sector, mutual sector and the FTSE100. His approach focusses on: a) connecting the CEOs personal narrative to the business purpose and
strategy, b) helping the CEO set up their team and office to optimise results and c) helping the leader develop strategies to ensure that they can sustain personal energy and balance over the long term.
He meets in person with each CEO every 4-6 weeks for a quality in depth session. This is supplemented by phone calls and emails as required between meetings. Emphasis is on building a trusted relationship which fosters constructive and creative dialogue. Joe is careful to adapt his approach to fit the practical and development needs of each individual CEO.
