I’ve often wondered why so many top tennis players are coached by former champions. Surely champions don’t necessarily make great coaches? Gradually, I came to understand more about what it takes to compete on the tennis world tour: being on the road year-round; the unique physical, mental, emotional, social, and even spiritual challenges of competing among the best in the world. Perhaps only someone who has actually lived that life can understand what it takes to perform, day after day, year after year, in such a demanding role? Maybe the most important things are only learned the hard way, on the job?
In the last months of my final CEO role, | wrote a down the hard lessons I had learned in the hot set. Over recent years, working as an advisor to other leaders, I’ve refined the list and, bit by bit, turned it into this book. It is not designed to be read cover to cover but rather snacked on. The learnings are grouped by theme but can be read in any order. Flick through and read whatever catches your interest.
I’d love to learn from you too. What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learned as a leader? If you’d like to share it, please email me using the contact page.
